Melanoma
Dr Pratt has a special interest in the field of melanoma surgery and is the current Chair of the Monash Health Melanoma MDT.
Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that develops from the pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) in the skin. It is often characterised by the presence of a mole or dark spot on the skin that may change in color, size, shape, or texture. Melanoma can be highly aggressive and can spread to other parts of the body if not treated early.
Surgery is often the primary treatment option for melanoma. The goal of surgery is to remove the cancerous tissue while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. The surgical approach may vary depending on the size and location of the cancer, as well as the patient's individual needs and goals.
Reconstructive surgery may be necessary to repair the skin and surrounding tissues after the cancer has been removed. This surgery may involve skin grafts or flaps to restore the appearance and function of the affected area.
