Otoplasty

Prominent Ear Surgery

Otoplasty (Prominent Ear Surgery) is a cosmetic procedure that can improve the appearance of the ears by reshaping the cartilage and repositioning the ears closer to the head. This surgery can help children who are self-conscious about their ears or have experienced teasing or bullying due to the appearance of their ears. The surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia and lasts between one and three hours, depending on the extent of the procedure.

 FAQs

  • After surgery the head is wrapped in a large bulky bandage which should be left intact until review at the one-week mark. This is often annoying and uncomfortable but it keeps the ears safe during this delicate period. There should not be excessive pain- and severe pain should prompt you to seek medical care immediately.

  • After review at the one-week-mark the dressings will be taken down and the wounds inspected. Usually it is okay to start showering from this point however the ears are still delicate and inadvertent forceful movement of the ears could result in stitches breaking and the ears returning to their original positions.

    For this reason, a headband must be worn for 6 weeks from the time of surgery. This must be full-time (except for showering) and must cover the ears.

  • Like all surgery, otoplasty (prominent ear surgery) carries some risks. They are as follows;

    ◉ There is scarring but it is usually well hidden behind the ear.

    ◉ Occasionally some of the sutures (stitches) used to shape the ear cartilages can be seen or felt through the thin ear skin.

    ◉ Occasionally stiches can break causing the ear shape to change

    ◉ There is a small risk of infection. If this occurs, it is usually minor but vert rarely severe infections of the ear cartilages resulting in permanent disfigurement can occur.

    ◉ There is occasionally mild pain in the post-operative period however severe pain should not be a feature and you should seek medical opinion of this is the case.

    ◉ Occasionally the aesthetic (cosmetic) result of the operation is not perfect- some possible issues are;

    ◉ Less than desired setback effect

    ◉ Over setback

    ◉ Unnatural appearance of the some of the folds of the ear

    ◉ Uneven setback from one side to the other.
